Green Mountain College’s 2014 commencement ceremony will be held outside on the lawn in front of Griswold Library on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at 10 a.m.
9:00 A.M., Commencement Line-up, Poultney United Methodist Church, Main Street Poultney.
10:00 A.M., Commencement, Griswold Library Lawn.
Immediately after Commencement, Commencement Luncheon, Withey Dining Hall, RSVP required.
Johanna Douglas has been named the student speaker at the College’s 2014 Commencement on May 17. Johanna is an Essex, Conn., native graduating with a B.A. degree in sustainable agriculture and food production, a minor in animal studies, and a certificate in renewable energy and ecological design. She graduates with an overall GPA of 3.99. Earlier this month Johanna was awarded the Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems Senior Award and the James M. Pollock Award for Exceptional Service and Dedication to Green Mountain College. A two-sport athlete at GMC, Johanna is the College’s all-time leader in goals scored in women’s lacrosse and was an All-Conference selection in lacrosse all four years she competed. Johanna’s ambitions include owning a dairy farm in the Northeast where she can raise her own food and contribute to building a local, safe and abundant food system. She begins work at Cricket Creek Farm in Williamstown, Mass. later this month.
Also on the podium on graduation day is the commencement speaker Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy. A longtime champion of environmental protection, constitutional rights, human rights and Vermont’s agricultural heritage, Leahy is the longest-serving member of the U.S. Senate. As President Pro Tempore, he is the second-highest ranking official in the Senate and third in line of presidential succession. Leahy serves as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and is the senior-most member of the Appropriations and Agriculture Committees. Senator Leahy will also receive an honorary doctor of laws degree from GMC during the ceremony.
